This is a private
tour for travelers who want to be immersed in the fascinating customs and
traditions of the vibrant island of Syros where Orthodox and Catholics harmoniously
coexist and celebrate the Easter together! After the Greek Revolution of 1821,
the refugees of Chios, Psara, Samos and Kasos settled on the island of Syros
and slowly began to develop shipping and trade, building a new city of
beginning and lavish churches. We invite you to explore the beautiful Orthodox
and Catholic churches of Syros!
We will pick you
up at your location.
Our first stop
will be the majestic Cathedral
of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of Hermoupolis. Located in the
prestigious Vaporia district, the cathedral boasts lavish interiors and an
impressive architectural structure, surrounded by unique high-ceiling mansions
that seem to float above the sea.
Following the
narrow streets of Hermoupolis, we will be led to the Church of the Transfiguration
of the Saviour and Diocese of Syros. This temple monument, built in 1824 by
refugees from Psara and Chios, stands near the city hall of Ermoupolis. It is a
three-aisled Basilica with a dome and two bell towers, which, among other
things, houses the Bell of St. Nicholas of Psara and various relics carried by
the refugees. Noteworthy for its stunning design reminiscent of the Church of
our Lady in Tinos, the church also features a black-and-white mosaic in the
courtyard and a historic arcade at the entrance, now sealed and distinguished
only by the original inscription. Additionally, in the western part of the
courtyard area lies the burial place of Anthimos Gazis. Adjacent to the church,
visitors can explore the ecclesiastical Museum, which hosts sacred vessels,
books, and manuscripts.
Next, we will
stroll to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin, the second
oldest church on the island, constructed behind the harbor in 1828. This
three-aisled Basilica boasts remarkable architecture and decoration. The
interior is adorned with exquisite wood and marble elements, while the domes
form a wooden frame reminiscent of an overturned boat. Of particular note is
the authentic icon of the Assumption dating back to 1562, painted by Dominikos
Theotokopoulos (El Greco), elevating the church to one of the most significant
landmarks on the island.
Our following
stop will be Saint George Church in Ano Syros, the Catholic diocese of
Syros. A private car will transfer you there. Built in 1200 on the highest
point of the hill of Ano Syros, it has undergone numerous renovations and
reconstructions over the years, with the latest carried out by the Tinian
architect Chatzisimos. The church is actually part of a larger complex
comprising the Church, Bell Tower, baptistery, sacristy, hospitality room,
historical archive building, Episcopal Palace, and an abandoned house. The
Cathedral itself is a three-aisled Basilica featuring marble columns. At the
entrance, visitors will be greeted by statues of Saints crafted by 18th-century
Italian sculptors, while inside, the intricate wood-carvings and marble
flooring, inspired by a Tinian sculptor, are sure to leave a lasting
impression.
Our last stop
will be the Church of the Resurrection of the Savior, to which we will
also be transported by private vehicle. This magnificent temple, dedicated to
the "Resurrection of the nation", dominates the hill of Hermoupolis.
Constructed in 1874 by the local architect Dimitris Eleftheriadis, the church
began consistent operation from 1908 onwards. It is a three-aisled
Byzantine-style church with neoclassical elements, featuring a dome, impressive
bell towers, and exceptionally unique icons.
