Highlights walking tour in Hermoupolis, the
Neoclassical Capital of Syros
This is a private
walking tour for travelers who want to travel back in time, follow the narrow
streets through the picturesque neighborhoods, discover images and experiences of
a bygone era and encounter monuments along with neoclassical buildings from the
imperious history. Stroll around the island’s landmarks: Apollon Theatre, Town
Hall, Vaporia, Neoclassical buildings and the archaeological museum.
We will set a meeting
point in Hermoupolis.
You will walk among
the narrow streets, small
groceries, shops, traditional stores of Hermoupolis with our experienced guide,
to smell Syros aromas, meet locals, see their everyday life, discover images and
experiences of a bygone era and encounter monuments along with neoclassical buildings
from the imperious history.
Our next stop
will be a visit to a remarkable Neoclassical mansion. Stepping into this
mansion, we're immersed in a world of timeless elegance. The walls adorned with
scenic paintings and the ceilings adorned with intricate plasterwork evoke the
grandeur of the past. Each room whispers stories of aristocratic life, offering
a glimpse into a bygone era of opulence and refinement.
Our journey
continues to the heart of Hermoupolis at Miaoulis square, where the Town Hall is located. It is one of the
largest and most impressive ones in all of Greece. Noteworthy elements of this
historic building include the hanging ladder at its entrance, the boardroom,
portraits of former mayors, the carriage of Princess Sissy, its architecture,
and of course, the hidden history dating back to 1876.
Before leaving the main square, we
will visit the Archaeological Museum of Syros, founded in 1834 and one
of the oldest museums in Greece. Since 1899, the
museum has been housed in four rooms of Ermoupolis City Hall. Its collections
include exhibits such as the Amfikypellon, a tubular cup from the end of the
3rd millennium, along with other artifacts, sculptures, and inscriptions from
the early Cycladic and Byzantine periods.
As we walk up
the main square, we'll come across the Apollon Theatre, one of Syros's
major attractions and a symbol of the island's rich cultural heritage. The
historic Apollon Theatre, built in 1864 by the Italian architect Pietro Sampo,
draws inspiration from four stunning Italian standards, including the Scala di
Milano.
Our final
destination is the Church of St. Nicholas, a magnificent Byzantine
church dedicated to the patron saint of Hermoupolis. Renowned for its lavish
interiors and impressive architectural structure, the church is situated in Vaporia,
an area where refugees from the northern Aegean and Crete settled during the
revolution. The area is characterized by the marvelous 'vaporia' - home-boats
seemingly hovering above the rocks, creating a picturesque and beautiful
landscape. The view is truly breathtaking.
